Wash Temperature Converter

Convert laundry temperatures between Celsius and Fahrenheit, then compare the result with common washer settings.

40°C equals 104°F.

Use the converted number as a translation, not a wash recommendation

A conversion tells you that two temperature numbers are equivalent. It does not decide whether that temperature is safe for your garment. If the care label gives a temperature limit, keep the washer setting within that item-specific limit.

Common conversions help when the label and washer use different units

For example, 30°C equals 86°F, 40°C equals 104°F and 60°C equals 140°F. Use the converter when the label is written in one unit and your machine controls use the other.

Need help choosing a temperature?

If you know the garment or fabric but do not know which washer temperature to choose, use the Wash Temperature Finder. For the difference between cold, warm and hot wash ranges, read Cold vs Warm vs Hot Water.

If the care label is unclear

Review How to Read Clothing Care Labels before treating a converted number as permission to use a hotter cycle.
