A clothing care label is not a list of optional suggestions. Read the symbols together: washing first, then bleach, drying, ironing and professional care. If a symbol sets a tighter limit than general laundry advice, the label is the item-specific rule to follow.
1. Washing: method, temperature and cycle
The wash symbol tells you whether machine washing is allowed, whether hand washing is required, and the maximum temperature or cycle severity. A lower-temperature or gentler instruction is a ceiling: choosing a harsher setting because another fabric could tolerate it can damage the finished garment.
2. Bleach: whether any bleach is allowed
Bleach symbols distinguish permission from prohibition and may differentiate chlorine from non-chlorine products. Do not infer bleach safety from garment color alone. Dyes, prints, elastane and finishes can all change compatibility.
3. Drying: tumble, heat and air-dry method
Drying symbols can allow or prohibit tumble drying and can specify heat level or an air-dry method such as line or flat drying. This stage is especially important for items prone to shrinkage, distortion, adhesive damage or stretch loss.
4. Ironing and professional care
Iron symbols control finishing heat. Professional-care symbols indicate dry-cleaning or wet-cleaning processes intended for specialist equipment. If the label requires professional care, a home substitute is not automatically equivalent.
