How to Treat Ice Cream Stains

Ice-cream stains combine food components such as protein, fat and sugar. ACI recommends enzyme-based pretreatment or soaking followed by laundering in the warmest water safe for the fabric.

Ice cream is a mixed food stain, so simply rinsing the visible color may not remove all of the residue. ACI recommends an enzyme-containing pretreatment or soak before laundering.

Use the warmest water that is safe for the finished garment rather than selecting a temperature from the stain name alone. Check again before drying.

First action

Lift away excess ice cream gently and keep the stained area from drying if you can treat it promptly.

Avoid: Do not jump to hot water without checking the garment care label and the stain-treatment directions.

Reviewed first-line process

  1. First

Remove excess ice cream gently without grinding it into the textile.

  2. Pretreat

Pretreat or soak with an enzyme-containing laundry product according to its directions.

  3. Launder

Launder using the warmest water allowed by the garment care label and treatment product directions.

  4. Dry Check

Check the area before machine drying and repeat a safe treatment if residue remains.
