The two bleach families do different jobs
ACI describes sodium hypochlorite bleach as stronger and disinfecting on suitable washables, while oxygen bleach is gentler and used on a broader range of washable fabrics.
The care label sets the boundary
FTC care labeling distinguishes bleach permitted, only non-chlorine bleach when needed, and do-not-bleach instructions.
Never guess from garment color alone
A white garment can still contain fibers, finishes or trims that are not chlorine-bleach safe.
Follow product and washer directions
Use the specified dispenser or dilution method and never improvise chemical mixtures. If the garment label prohibits bleach, choose another stain or brightening strategy.
Use product-specific instructions
Garment care labels, appliance manuals and laundry-product directions can be more specific than a general guide. Use them when they set a tighter limit.
