Hand wash only when the label allows it
“Hand wash” is a defined care method, not a universal safe fallback for every delicate-looking garment. Dry-clean-only items and garments with special construction should not be converted to hand washing without reliable product-specific guidance.
Use the detergent as directed
Choose a product suitable for hand washing and the fabric, then follow its dose directions. Highly concentrated machine products are not automatically appropriate for a small hand-wash basin.
Use gentle movement
ACI hand-washing guidance emphasizes gentle handling rather than rubbing or wringing. Support the item in water, allow the cleaning solution to work and rinse thoroughly.
Remove water without twisting
For shape-sensitive garments, press out water gently or use a towel to absorb moisture when appropriate. Follow the care label for flat drying, line drying or another method.
Garment care labels, appliance manuals and laundry-product directions can be more specific than a general guide. Use them when they set a tighter limit.
