Act before the wine dries
Blot liquid without rubbing it into a wider area, then use cool water as the first response. The goal is to remove as much loose wine as practical before adding a laundry pretreatment product.
Pretreat within the fabric limits
Use a prewash stain remover or liquid laundry detergent according to its directions. Do not use the fact that a garment is white as automatic permission to bleach it. Bleach compatibility comes from the finished-item care label and the bleach product directions.
Wash, inspect, then decide whether to dry
Launder with the warmest water permitted by the care label after pretreatment. Inspect the stain before machine drying. A remaining pink or brown shadow is a reason to repeat a safe treatment, not a reason to increase dryer heat.

Bleach choice depends on fabric and color
Oxygen or chlorine bleach is not universally safe. Use only a product and concentration permitted by both garment label and product directions.
Repeat treatment before drying if color remains
A faint pink or purple cast means the stain is not finished. Avoid dryer heat until the result is acceptable.
Remove excess red wine residue without spreading it, then use a treatment that matches the garment care label and keep dryer heat out until the result is clean.
Avoid: Do not machine dry the item while visible discoloration remains. Use bleach only when both the garment care label and product directions permit it.
