Why oil needs a different first step
Oil and water do not mix well, so a normal rinse alone may leave a darker greasy patch. Remove or blot excess oil first and avoid spreading it across a larger area.
Pretreat the oily area
Use a laundry pretreatment or other grease-cutting method that is compatible with the garment and product directions. Test uncertain treatments on a hidden area and do not exceed the care label.
Wash within the garment limits
Choose the cycle and temperature permitted by the care label. The warmest safe setting can help some greasy soils, but fabric limits take priority over a generic stain rule.
Inspect before drying
If the dark patch remains after washing, repeat a compatible treatment before tumble drying. Dryer heat can make a remaining oily stain harder to remove.
