How to Treat Butter Stains

Butter is an oily food stain. ACI guidance supports pretreatment with a laundry stain-removal product before laundering at the hottest temperature that is safe for the fabric.

Butter behaves primarily as an oily food stain. Removing surface residue first keeps you from distributing more oil through the fabric during pretreatment.

ACI recommends pretreatment followed by laundering in the hottest water safe for the fabric. “Hottest safe” is a care-label limit, not a recommendation to choose the hottest washer setting by default.

First action

Lift or blot excess butter without spreading the oily mark across a larger area.

Avoid: Do not machine dry while an oily shadow remains, and keep wash temperature within the garment care-label limit.

Reviewed first-line process

  1. First

Remove excess butter gently with a dull edge or absorbent material without spreading it.

  2. Pretreat

Pretreat with a prewash stain remover or liquid laundry detergent according to the product directions.

  3. Launder

Launder using the hottest water that the garment care label safely permits.

  4. Dry Check

Inspect for an oily shadow before machine drying and repeat safe treatment if needed.

Fabric-specific coverage

No fabric-specific solver rule has passed review yet.

A listed fabric means WashCareLab has an approved runtime rule for this stain and fabric. It does not override a dry-clean-only or otherwise restrictive garment label.
