How to Wash Gym & Workout Clothes

Workout clothes often use polyester, nylon and elastane that hold sweat and body oils differently from cotton. Prompt drying, inside-out washing and conservative heat help protect performance fabrics.

Do not leave sweaty gear sealed up

Workout clothes can stay damp in a gym bag or hamper, which gives odor more time to build. Air damp garments before laundry day when immediate washing is not practical, and keep them from sitting wet in a closed pile.

Turn the working side outward to the wash

Turning activewear inside out can expose the side carrying more sweat and body oils to the wash liquor. Use the care label to choose the cycle and temperature, and dose detergent from the product directions instead of adding extra product because the load smells stronger.

Protect stretch and performance finishes

Many activewear garments contain elastane or technical finishes. High heat and some softening products can work against the properties the garment is designed to provide. Follow the label and product directions, and use a conservative drying method when heat sensitivity is high.

Handle persistent odor as a process problem

If odor remains after washing, recheck load size, detergent dose, cycle choice and drying. The Laundry Troubleshooter can guide those process checks without claiming to diagnose the appliance itself.

Odor and synthetic fibers

Performance fabrics can hold body oils and odor differently from cotton. Do not mask residue with extra detergent or softener; use the care-label cycle, the correct dose and complete drying, and move persistent odor problems into the Laundry Troubleshooter flow.

Care label first

Item construction, filling, coatings, electrical components and trim can change the safe method. Follow the finished-item care label and manufacturer instructions when they are more specific.

Decision points for this item

care label

Read the finished-item care label and any manufacturer instructions before choosing the wash or dry method.

Item construction can be more important than the broad item category.

Watch for: Performance finishes and elastane can be heat-sensitive. Fabric softener may be unsuitable for some moisture-wicking garments.

washing

Confirm that home washing and the selected method are allowed before adding water or using a washer.

Materials, trims, coatings, fillings and electronics can change eligibility.

Watch for: Do not infer machine-wash permission from a similar-looking item.

loading

Give the item enough room to move and keep it away from incompatible rough, heavy or dye-unstable laundry.

Mechanical stress, dye transfer and load balance can affect both cleaning and item condition.

Watch for: Split or isolate the load when weight, color or construction conflicts with other items.

drying

Use only the drying method and temperature allowed by the item instructions and make sure the item is fully dry before storage.

Heat, tumbling, tension and retained moisture create different risks for different constructions.

Watch for: Performance finishes and elastane can be heat-sensitive. Fabric softener may be unsuitable for some moisture-wicking garments.
