Where should laundry detergent go?
Use the location specified by the washer and detergent manufacturer. Many front-load and HE machines use a labeled dispenser; some top-load products are added to the drum or water in a specified order. Do not guess from machine style alone.

Product form matters
Liquid, powder and single-dose packets may have different placement instructions. A packet is not automatically interchangeable with liquid detergent in a dispenser drawer.
Do not pour concentrated product onto fabric unless directed
Direct contact can leave residue or discoloration on some materials. Follow the product directions for where and when to add it.
Dose and placement are separate decisions
Even when detergent is in the correct compartment, overdosing can still create residue or rinsing problems. Measure according to the product label and load conditions.
Garment care labels, appliance manuals and laundry-product directions can be more specific than a general guide. Use them when they set a tighter limit.
