Start with the decision that matters
“Delicate” is a handling need, not one fiber. Silk, lace, fine knits, lingerie and embellished garments can require different methods, so start with the finished-item label.
Choose the process
For machine-washable delicates, reduce snag risk with compatible load partners and a mesh bag when appropriate. Select the gentle/delicate cycle only if it matches the washer manual and garment instructions.
Avoid the common shortcut
Use a compatible mild detergent and the label-safe temperature. Do not escalate to bleach, strong stain removers or hot water without checking fiber, dye and finish compatibility.
Finish and troubleshoot
Support wet garments and use the specified drying method. Many delicate items should avoid high dryer heat, but the label remains the final limit.
Use product-specific instructions
Garment care labels, appliance manuals and laundry-product directions can be more specific than a general guide. Use them when they set a tighter limit.
