How to Use a Mesh Laundry Bag

Use a mesh laundry bag to contain small or snag-prone machine-washable items, but do not treat the bag as permission to machine wash something whose care label says otherwise.

Start with the decision that matters

A mesh bag is useful for small socks, bras, some lace pieces and other machine-washable items that can tangle or snag. It changes mechanical exposure; it does not change the garment care label.

Choose the process

Choose a bag large enough that the item is not tightly packed. Close hooks and fasteners where practical so they do not catch the mesh or neighboring garments.

Avoid the common shortcut

Place the bag in a compatible load with similar color, temperature and cycle needs. The washer still needs enough free space for water movement and rinsing.

Finish and troubleshoot

Remove items promptly after washing and use each garment’s drying instructions. Delicates that belong in a mesh bag often have lower dryer-heat limits as well.

Use product-specific instructions

Garment care labels, appliance manuals and laundry-product directions can be more specific than a general guide. Use them when they set a tighter limit.
