Start with the decision that matters
Liquid fabric softener and dryer sheets act at different stages. Liquid products are normally dispensed into the rinse as directed; dryer sheets are designed for the dryer.
Choose the process
Both can target softness, static or wrinkles, but they are not appropriate for every textile. Towels, microfiber, performance fabrics and flame-resistant garments can have product- or manufacturer-specific restrictions.
Avoid the common shortcut
Never pour concentrated softener directly onto fabric unless the product explicitly instructs it. Use the washer dispenser and activate any required softener setting according to the machine manual.
Finish and troubleshoot
Choose the product only after checking the fabric/item instructions. If the goal is static control rather than softness, a drying-method or load-composition change may also matter.
Garment care labels, appliance manuals and laundry-product directions can be more specific than a general guide. Use them when they set a tighter limit.
