Musty odor is strongly linked to lingering moisture
Wet laundry left in the washer or a damp pile for too long can develop a musty smell. Prompt transfer and complete drying are simple but important controls.
If the smell returns across multiple loads
The washer itself may need attention. Follow the model-specific cleaning instructions for the drum, gasket, dispensers and any clean-washer cycle. Using the wrong detergent type or too much product can contribute to residue inside some machines.
Rewash before drying when odor is obvious
If clothes already smell musty when they leave the washer, rewashing is generally more sensible than using dryer heat to mask the problem. Respect the garment care labels when choosing the rewash settings.
Prevent the next occurrence
Remove loads promptly, leave the washer to dry as the manufacturer recommends, dose detergent correctly and avoid overloading.
